A Queer Reimagining of Simon Stephens’ Heisenberg Comes to Arcola Theatre

A female-led interpretation of Simon Stephens’ acclaimed play Heisenberg comes to Arcola Theatre this April. Directed by Katharine Farmer, this queer reimagining explores love, identity, and human connection through an innovative lens that challenges traditional power dynamics and heteronormative expectations.

About the Production

Set against the bustling backdrop of St Pancras train station, Heisenberg reinterprets the original 2015 play for a modern audience. In this version:

  • Georgie, a young free spirit, impulsively plants a kiss on Alex, a reserved 70-year-old woman waiting on a bench.

  • When Georgie reappears at Alex’s shop, the once orderly life of Alex is thrown into chaos, sparking a journey of unexpected transformation and vibrant self-discovery.

  • This production strips away familiar age-gap stereotypes to uncover the complexities of queer love and the transformative power of human connection.

Cast & Creative Team

The production stars:

  • Jenny Galloway – Olivier Award-winner known for her roles in Mamma Mia! and Les Misérables 10th & 25th Anniversary Concerts

  • Faline England – Renowned for her work on 9-1-1 and Fox

Directed by Katharine Farmer, whose credits include 23.5 Hours and work at Park Theatre, the creative team brings a wealth of expertise. Katharine Farmer reimagines Heisenberg with a fresh queer perspective. She explains, “By recasting Georgie and Alex as two women, we expose something more fundamental about human connection. The uncertainty principle at the heart of the play takes on new resonance when we consider how queer love has historically lived in spaces of ambiguity and possibility. This production challenges heteronormative expectations and celebrates the transformative nature of intimate relationships.”

Her bold reinterpretation redefines the narrative of Heisenberg, inviting audiences to witness a story where vulnerability and the unpredictable nature of love are at the forefront.
