About By Royal Appointment

By Royal Appointment is a witty, poignant, and insightful look into the role of fashion in shaping the public image of Queen Elizabeth II. The play imagines the powerful yet often unseen figures behind her iconic wardrobe: her Designer, Milliner, and especially her Dresser—a working-class girl who rises to a position of great influence. Through the lens of clothing choices, the play explores the Queen's ability to express her thoughts and opinions while maintaining her famous discretion.

Anne Reid will portray Queen Elizabeth II, bringing her trademark warmth and depth to the role. Caroline Quentin stars as The Dresser, the power behind the throne who influences the Queen’s wardrobe decisions. James Dreyfus plays The Milliner, a character who creates the iconic hats that express royal sentiments, while James Wilby portrays The Designer, who shapes the visual narrative of the Queen’s image.

Daisy Goodwin's Debut Play

This marks Daisy Goodwin's debut as a playwright. Known for her work as the creator of the hit ITV series Victoria and as the author of historical novels like The Last Duchess, The Fortune Hunter, and Victoria, Goodwin brings her skill for historical storytelling to the stage. Her other credits as a producer include Grand Designs and Escape to the Country.

The production is directed by Dominic Dromgoole, former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, who brings his expertise in large-scale theatrical productions to this play.

This promises to be a compelling and engaging exploration of power, discretion, and the carefully curated image of one of the most iconic figures in modern history. Tickets are on sale for performances at Theatre Royal Bath and the tour venues.
