Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury has announced the premiere of a new play by Amy Rosenthal, marking the launch of Marlowe Theatre Productions. The Party Girls, a captivating historical drama, will be the first tour to be produced by the theatre as part of this exciting new venture.

About The Party Girls

The Party Girls transports audiences into the glamorous world of the Mitford sisters in pre-war high society. The play explores the bonds of sisterhood, which are tested by new desires and the growing tensions of the political climate. Set against the backdrop of the rise of extremism and dangerous populist leaders, this world premiere delves into the complex lives of the Mitford girls, blending humor, love, and historical relevance.

Creative Team Behind The Party Girls

The production is directed by Richard Beecham, with Simon Kenny designing the set and Aideen Malone handling the lighting design. Adrienne Quartly is the composer and sound designer, while Annelie Powell takes care of casting.

Deborah Shaw, Chief Executive of Marlowe Theatre, expressed her excitement about the new play:

“When we first read The Party Girls by Amy Rosenthal, we knew we had a majorly important, prescient play on our hands. I couldn’t be more delighted to launch Marlowe Theatre Productions with this world premiere. It showcases our commitment to creating world-class theatre in Kent and working with top creatives.”

Amy Rosenthal’s Inspiration for the Play

Amy Rosenthal reflected on the play’s themes:

“When I started researching this play, I knew little about the Mitford sisters beyond their notorious affiliations. What began as an enquiry into how a family of aristocratic young women became so politically polarised has turned into a passion project. The play’s themes have grown increasingly resonant as we see the rise of Fascism and antisemitism once again.”

The play delves into family, identity, love, and the impact of political ideologies, with humor and ultimately, hope.

Richard Beecham’s Take on The Party Girls

Director Richard Beecham shared his thoughts on the production:

“I’m thrilled to be directing the world premiere of Amy Rosenthal’s The Party Girls. Amy’s brilliant portrayal of the Mitford sisters explores the present through the past, uncovering the political in the personal, and finding considerable humor amidst the horror and heartache. I’m excited to bring this beautifully written play to life alongside my creative collaborators.”

Tour Dates for The Party Girls

The Party Girls will debut at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury from 1 to 6 September 2025, with a press night scheduled for 3 September 2025. The production will then tour to several venues across the UK, including:
