Seven Dials Playhouse Sells Long-Term Lease to Secure Future
Seven Dials Playhouse has sold the long-term lease on its building, marking a pivotal step in securing its future and enabling a new phase of development. The move allows the organisation to focus on its mission of fostering creativity, collaboration, and professional growth in the heart of the West End.
A Creative Hub in the West End
Seven Dials Playhouse serves as a vital space for artists and creatives, offering opportunities to develop and present work. With a main theatre space and a 50-seat studio, it hosts a year-round programme of theatre, professional development, and works-in-progress. Over the last two years, the organisation has supported over 250 artists and companies, providing resources, co-producing, and offering in-kind support.
Like many arts organisations, Seven Dials Playhouse faced significant challenges following its February 2022 reopening, including the lingering effects of COVID-19, shifts in audience behavior, and economic pressures. Financial constraints led to the redundancy of 75% of roles during the pandemic, leaving the organisation cash-poor despite holding valuable assets, including the leasehold on its building.
The lease sale enables the organisation to:
Clear historic debts, including those linked to the lease purchase in 1994.
Rebuild capacity by recruiting key roles.
Reimagine its business model to better support artists and creatives.
Seven Dials Playhouse is committed to continuing its work as a creative hub and is planning a programming announcement early next year.
In a statement, the Playhouse said:
“We want to thank the artists and companies that have entrusted us with their work and time. We are excited to continue supporting individuals and companies, inviting artists and audiences into our home in the West End, and expanding our impact on the industry.”
This decision ensures the Playhouse can continue its legacy as a cornerstone for creative collaboration in the UK theatre industry.
